New to Owning a Septic System? Septic FAQs
If you just bought a home with a septic system and it’s your first time having this type of sewer, you probably have questions. You probably know that you will need to maintain this system with pumping and inspections, but you may not know how often or how to prevent septic problems. Here are some frequently asked questions we hear at Eco Pump Services from new septic owners and answers to these common septic FAQs.
How Often Should My Septic Tank Be Pumped?
This is by far the most asked question and the one with the most unsatisfying answer. The basic answer is every three to five years, but it really depends on your home and situation. If you have a small septic tank and a house filled beyond normal capacity, you may need your tank pumped every year. Those with a large home and tank with only one or two people living there may be able to comfortably wait the full five years. A septic system professional can evaluate your specific tank and situation to recommend a prudent pumping schedule.
What Homeowner Maintenance Is Needed?
For the most part, homeowners should not need to do anything for their septic system except schedule inspections and pumping. However, there are things that need to be avoided. A few house rules you need to implement with a septic system include:
- Do not put grease, coffee grounds, solvents, chemicals or excessive food waste down the drain
- Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet – no tampons or other personal items
- Reduce water waste using water efficient plumping fixtures and water conservation
- Protect your drain field – do not let vehicles drive over your drain field or build anything on your field
- Do not use liquid clog removers – boiling water or a snake is best for removing clogs with a septic system
Limiting harm to your septic system is the best way to avoid septic backups and failure. Just remember that everything that goes down your drains must be processed through the septic system. If it cannot break down, like diapers, cotton and other items, it can clog your system or will need to be pumped out.
If you keep up with professional maintenance and avoid overtaxing your septic system, it can last for decades without problems. To schedule your next septic pumping or inspection in or around Pembroke Pines, FL, call our team at Eco Pump Services.
